into a group called newtown united. there is not necessarily people who have been politically active in the past or who have had any experience trying to change policies or get certain law enacted. but some members of newtown united headed to washington today. they took the day off from their jobs. they woke up at dawn. they drove to washington to go meet with members of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. newtown united, a group of people at the epicenter of national tragedy. one of the parents who traveled to washington today was lucky enough to have his child, who attends sandy hook elementary come home from that school on friday. but he said today that he is taking action now in the wake of the shootings because he does not think the next time it should just depend on luck. >> every time something like columbine, virginia tech were happening, i would avert my eyes, and i will still think that something will be done. but all those believes were shattered on friday. and now i think we all need to speak up. >> joining us now for the interview is the reverend welton gaddy. he

on washington. that means taking on the nra. they call themselves newtown united. their mission, to reduce gun violence and prevent other communities from ever having to live their nightmare. bill toomey helped put together that group. and earlier, i spoke with him today and his daughter, sierra. i asked them if they have made any progress in their talks with politicians on the issue of gun control. >> we had a series of meetings, actually, to try and begin a conversation in the community around what happened and how we can take this terrible tragedy and turn it into something positive. so what we heard from the senators as well as some of our congressional -- the rest of our congressional delegation was that the moment in time is now. that the tide is turning in this country as it relates to gun violence and what we can do about it. and we want to try and bring the community together as quickly as possible to try and lend our voice to the national voice so that we can really make something meaningful happen out of this terrible event. >> and the name of your group is newtown united. but you s

from newtown, connecticut, is what seems like the inevitability now that the next united states secretary of state is going to be massachusetts democratic senator john kerry. nbc news has been able to confirm that senator kerry will be nominated for that job by president obama likely sometime this week. senator kerry is not expected to face significant opposition in the senate. if he does become secretary of state, that, of course, would mean a special election in massachusetts for his senate seat.0 days after the seat becomes vacant. one of the names rising to the top of the list is a potential john kerry replacement in the senate is vicky kenny. vicky kennedy, the widow of the late senator ted kennedy. asked by local news outlets whether she might be up for this job, a spokeswoman for vicky kennedy said, "we have no comment on this at this time." in other words, stay tuned. finally, another state that has just dealt with what massachusetts is contemplating right now, the prospect of replacing a long-time senator, is the state of south carolina. today south carolina governor ni

, briefing reporters on what is going on. he, like the president of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest de

, as it gets to work. ♪ cisco. tomorrow starts here. >>> throughout newtown, connecticut, teddy bears, the candles, pictures of christmas trees, they were displayed everywhere in remembrance of the victims who lost their lives in the shooting massacre at sandy hook elementary. the community united during the holiday to support the families of the victims who are grieving. 20 children, 7 adults killed on december 14th. the memorials remembering them are here to stay, we have learned. an official announced a special plan by the city to convert the memorial, here is part of what this city official told residents. the thousands of flowers, letters and prayers, the signs and photos, teddy bears and more will be gathered and processed into soil that will serve in the foundation of a future permanent memorial to honor the slain children and adults. officials say it will be a sacred memorial. the items will be collected and converted starting this week. >>> now, new information on that tragic shooting in upstate new york on christmas eve. two firefighters were shot and killed. two others were
